PBL Presentations

TERM 3, WEEK 9
Our students have been working on their own PBL activities over the term. This means they have been pursuing their own interests and passions, and learning a whole lot of new skills and knowledge along the way. Yesterday some of the kids presented their learning to the rest of the team. They have really worked hard - well done!

Olympic Music Video

TERM 3, WEEK 7
Room 24 decided to make a music video this term to show our support to our Olympic athletes over in Rio. The kids really got into the spirit and had a lot of fun making the video. Here it is:

Canterbury Kings Visit

TERM 3, WEEK 7
On Thursday Team Roto had a visit from some members of the Canterbury Kings cricket teams. Rachel, Frankie and Leo shared some of their playing and travelling experiences, and the kids loved asking them lots of questions and getting their autographs. Hopefully the players have inspired lots of the kids to give cricket a try this summer!


Gala Day Fun

TERM 3, WEEK 6
On Sunday the school held a Community Gala Day. There were lots of fun activities to do like Crazy Bikes, Bouncy Castles, and Kicking for Cash. It was also great to see some of our kids perform as part of the Kapa Haka and Jump Jam groups.

Dancing in the Aisles

TERM 3, WEEK 6
On Friday afternoon Team Miro walked over to Shirley Boys High School to watch some of their musicians perform some songs for us. The music was great and the kids (and parent helpers) were upon their feet dancing for almost the whole show!


Walkathon

TERM 3, WEEK 5
This week the whole school competed in a Walkathon to raise money for learning resources at school. The challenge was to complete 20 laps of a circuit around the school. In very cold conditions, everyone showed great determination and perseverance to do as many laps as they could. Well done team!


Science Fun

TERM 3, WEEK 4
Our science topic was kicked off this term with an exciting visit to our school by Science Alive! The kids got to be Forensic Scientists for the day, and had to solve a crime by searching for clues, collecting evidence and exploring chemical reactions.
It has also inspired us to do some of our own investigations in class. So we have been making our own hypotheses and carrying out experiments with flight, insulation, heating, and melting and freezing.



Gym Skills

TERM 3, WEEK 4
For P.E. this term we are learning gymnastics. The kids have been having a great time working on their balancing, jumping, rolling and flipping skills. Aiming for Olympic glory in 2032!


Leaving Celebration

TERM 3, WEEK 3
Two of our Roto students left our school this week, so we had a class party to celebrate their time with us. We wish Caine and Ana all the best at their new schools!


Winter Tournament

TERM 3, WEEK 3
Some of our students got to take part in the North-East Zone Winter Sports Tournament at Hagley Park this week, which involved Rugby, Soccer, Hockey and Netball. Well done to everyone who took part - lots of skill, determination and fair play on display from Banks Ave School.


Olympic Moves

TERM 3, WEEK 2
We have been following our NZ athletes closely at the Rio Olympics, as well as learning about some of the history and values of the Olympic Games. While we have been celebrating their successes, the athletes have been helping us learn some dance routines based on their sports.

Interior Design

TERM 3, WEEK 1
Welcome back to the new term everyone! It was a great to see some new carpet waiting for us in our rooms when we got back after the holidays. They look so much better!!
The students had a great time on the first day helping to decide on the layout of the furniture in the classes, and setting up some of the learning spaces and wall displays.


Show Time!

TERM 2, WEEK 10
After all that preparation, the time had finally come for our proper performance in front of an audience. Some kids were nervous but everyone gave it their best, and the show and the singing were fantastic! Well done Team Miro for all your hard work!!







Practice, Practice, Practice

TERM 2, WEEK 9
It has been a busy few weeks preparing for our performance next week, but things are starting to come together. The groups have been working hard out on their acts, getting their costumes and props sorted, and practicing the songs.


Can We Build It?

TERM 2, WEEK 7This term the kids have been able to explore their own interests and learn some new skills during PBL time (Passion Based Learning). Building and making things was a popular choice, and one group showed great team work to build a Go-Kart - just waiting for wheels now!


HEART Reward

TERM 2, WEEK 6
After a full on week of working together to prepare for our upcoming performance, Team Roto earned their mid-term HEART movie reward on Friday. Everyone's eyes are glued to the screen here!


I Wish I Was...

TERM 2, WEEK 3
The kids had a blast dressing up for the "I Wish I Was" mufti day on Friday. So much effort went into the costumes, and lots of money was raised for the Make a Wish Foundation, so well done everyone!! And was that a real All Black spotted teaching in Room 24??


Teeing Off

TERM 2, WEEK 3
Phew! Week 3 has been a very busy week in Team Roto - but managed to squeeze in a spot of golf!! We had our second golf lesson on Wednesday, and were working on our chip shots. Lots of fun.


Heavy Learning!

TERM 2, WEEK 2
For Maths this week we were learning about weight. We got to do some fun, hands-on activities to learn how to estimate, compare, and read the weight of a variety of different objects.



Construction Time

TERM 2, WEEK 1
Today we learnt some techniques for constructing/joining materials in preparation for building props for our end of term production. The kids created some amazing structures and had a lot of fun!

My Roll Model

My roll model is Tessa because she's smart.She is as quick as a whip and things need to be done like a maths sheet she takes it seriously. She is funny,she's quiet,nice and helpful. Tessa is one of my bffs .she is an awesome reader,writer and responsible. Dosent get distracted in class. She is a lovely role model. She learns things fast to I am even going to her slumber party it is going to be a blast what I mean is it is going to be awesome

Art Trip

TERM 1, WEEK 10
Team Roto got to visit the Spectrum Street Art Festival and the COCA Art Gallery today. Some really amazing and interesting artwork on display, and the kids had a great time. They are already asking if we can do more art in class! A big thank you to all the parent helpers that came along as well.


School Cross Country

TERM 1, WEEK 9
Despite a bit of rain, the students gave it everything in the school Cross Country today. Well done everyone!!

Rivers of Flowers Celebration

TERM 1, WEEK 4
Banks Avenue School went down to the Avon River on the 22nd February to take part in the River of Flowers earthquake 5 year anniversary memorial. The students performed 2 fantastic songs and a haka, as well as getting to mark the occasion by throwing some flowers into the river.
